Martin grew up on the family farm near West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska, but did not follow his father into farming. He instead learned to play the violin, and became a concert-grade player. On 22 March 1922 Martin married Louise Minnie Stoltzman (b. 20 November 1903), daughter of William F. and Minnie A. (Schulz) Stoltzman, in West Point. Martin and Minnie set up housekeeping in Bancroft, in Cuming County, and their first four children were born there. Sometime between December 1928 and June 1931 they moved to California. Inasmuch as the Great Depression began in 1929, the economic conditions were probably the cause of the move. Three more children, all girls, were born to them in California. Martin and Minnie's children were, in birth order: Eleanor (1922); Warren Howard (1924); Wayne Robert (1926); Gordon Ernest (1928); Barbara Jean (1931); Marlene; and Lois. Martin died on 3 November 1951 in Springfield, Oregon at the age of 53. Minnie passed away at the age of 89 on 11 July 1993. ---Michael L. Clark | ||||||||||||||
